Theoretical lack of the sexual health element in the National Program for the Elderly in Cuba

Abstract

Introduction: aging in Cuba is the main demographic problem, with a figure that reaches 18.3% of the population aged 60 and over.

Objective: to make a critical assessment of the content of the National Program for the Elderly from its theoretical lack of the sexual health element as an integrating vision of man.

Methodological Design: a documentary research was carried out, supported by diverse searches in printed and digital materials based on the online catalog of the Infomed virtual library, in general databases, specific to Cuba and multidisciplinary as well as digital journals.

Development: the critical analysis of the National Program for Older Adults allows us to notice that in its three subprograms it makes an unbalanced assessment of the biomedical and psychosocial aspects, establishes a group of actions and guides professionals in the health sector on how to work with adults greater but markedly in the sense of prevention andtreatment of illnesses as well as in the care of rehabilitation once you have a disability, for its part in the psychological aspect is restricted to the assessment of cognitive impairment and in no case is referred to the sexual sphere as a component of the integral Health.

Conclusion: the National Program for Older Adults does not include the assessment of the sexual sphere, nor is it aimed at health personnel as taking into account this element as part of the comprehensive assessment of the health of the elderly.
