How much is known about Genetic Editing in the Medicine career?

Introduction: gene editing makes it possible to add, eliminate or replace genetic material, allowing the alteration of genes with the aim of rectifying genetic errors and also expressing more optimal characteristics to adapt to the environment. Objective: to evaluate the level of knowledge on gene editing in the Medicine career at the University of Medical Sciences of Granma. Methods: an observational, descriptive and transversal study was carried out at the University of Medical Sciences of Granma on gene editing, in June 2023. The sample consisted of 174 undergraduate and graduate students who were surveyed and distributed as follows: students in groups by years 3, 4, 5 and 6; residents by years 1, 2, 3 and 4; specialists in ranks by years of graduation as a specialist ≤10 years, 11-20 years, >20 years. Results: the predominant level of knowledge in undergraduates was medium, represented by 4th year with 57.8%. The predominant level of knowledge in residents was low, represented by 3rd year with 62.5%. The predominant level of knowledge in specialists was low, represented by those in the ≤10 year range with 66.67%. The predominant level of knowledge about gene editing was null, represented by the specialists with 100%. The predominant level of knowledge about CRISPR-Cas9 was null, represented by residents and specialists with 100% respectively. Conclusions: the level of knowledge about gene editing in the medical career is predominantly null.Downloads
