Influence of social determinants on the quality of life of the elderly in Manzanillo

Abstract

Introduction: The current approach to health in an aging country requires solid knowledge of the social and individual determinants of health.

Objective: To identify the pattern of the factors that lead to a higher predisposition to classify older adults in Manzanillo with a medium or low quality of life.

Methodological Design: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from October 2015 to December 2016. 108 seniors selected by randomized simple sampling were interviewed in residents of health areas 3 and 4 of Manzanillo Polyclinic No. 1. To assess the quality of life the MGH Scale was used.

Results: With high perceived quality of life there are only 28 adults for a 25.9%. There are 3 determinants that provide the highest percentages in the adults studied: 63% with low income, 66.7% with an active social life and 85.2% with an unbalanced diet. In the classification tree it is observed that there are 2 critical routes that all those who have it are classified in quality of average or low life, these are: Acceptable conditions in the house + Not low income + Passive social life = 12 people, and Conditions Acceptable in housing + Low income = 28 people, both values represent 100% of those who have this combination of factors.

Conclusions: Income and objective housing conditions do not determine the quality of life perceived by the elderly in Manzanillo.
