Introduction: retinitis pigmentosa is a disease that affects the photoreceptors and other layers of the retina, causing night blindness, decreased peripheral vision and later central vision. Visual health is a predominant factor in the quality of life of older adults, so its decline affects the intellectual, physical and and psychological development of these patients. Objective: to characterize older adults with retinitis pigmentosa in the province of Santiago de Cuba. Methodology: a descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in older adults diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa in Santiago de Cuba in the period January-March 2023. The universe consisted of 166 older adults with the disease. The information was obtained from the database of patients with retinitis pigmentosa. Absolute numbers and percentages were used to summarize the information and tables to presentation. Results: the study was predominantly female (56.6 %) and the age group between 60 and 69 years (42.8 %); patients who did not present associated syndromes (81.3 %) and in stage IV of the disease (41 %), the most frequent inheritance was undefined (46 %) and patients with a late onset of the disease (54.2 %). Conclusions: the study allowed us to know the characteristics of retinitis pigmentosa in this age group.
