El ejercicio de la medicina en entornos rurales implica una serie de características y desafíos únicos. Con frecuencia, los médicos son los únicos proveedores de atención sanitaria en sus comunidades, lo que conlleva una gran responsabilidad y una amplia variedad de tareas, que a menudo exceden su formación inicial. La preparación continua resulta esencial, ya que se debe manejar una gran diversidad de casos clínicos, muchas veces con acceso limitado a tecnología avanzada, lo que exige creatividad y adaptabilidad en la práctica clínica.
