Secondary glioblastoma multiforme in a pediatric patient. Case presentation and review of the literature
Keywords:
Glioblastoma Multiforme, Neurofibromatosis 2, NeurosurgeryAbstract
Introduction: Glioblastoma Multiforme is a primary neoplasm of the Central Nervous System. They are aggressive tumors classified according to the World Health Organization as grade IV gliomas, with peak incidence by age between 40 and 70 years old, being infrequent in pediatric ages. The prognosis of this entity is unfavorable at any age and life expectancy does not exceed 6 months after diagnosis.
Case presentation: 9-year-old female school patient with a history of Neurofibromatosis type 2, with initial diagnosis of Pleomorphic Xanthoastrocytoma that progressed to Secondary Glioblastoma Multiforme. The patient underwent surgery and received the corresponding oncologic treatment.
Conclusions: GBM is an aggressive neoplasm with a poor prognosis for life at any age. The presented case is an achievement for Pediatric Neurosurgery in the country, because after 19 months of surgical intervention and oncologic treatment the patient shows a clinical and imageneological improvement.
