Introduction: Transverse micrognathia is an anomaly that affects the transverse development of the maxilla and is considered one of the fundamental morphopathological causes of dental malocclusions. Objective: To describe the relationship between deforming oral habits associated with transverse micrognathia in schoolchildren. Method: An analytical observational study of the case-control type
was carried out in schoolchildren belonging to the Wilfredo Pagés Pérez primary school in Manzanillo,
Granma, during the period from September to December 2024. The study population consisted of 137 children enrolled from preschool to third grade of schooling. At the discretion of the authors, 45 cases and 60 controls were worked with who were admitted to the Orthodontic consultation of the Municipal Clinic during the study period. The variables used were age, sex and deforming oral habits (mouth breathing, digital sucking, use of a bottle or tete). Results: Females predominated with 30 cases, representing 48.4%; in the cases, children aged 8 years old predominated with 66.70%; in
the controls, the highest percentage corresponded to those aged 7 years (79.60%). Risk factors for the appearance of transverse micrognathism were mouth breathing, digital sucking, and the use of a bottle or pacifier with p=0.171, p=0.000, p=0.015, and p=0.031; respectively. Conclusions: There was a close relationship between deforming oral habits, mouth breathing, digital sucking, and the use of a bottle or teat as etiological factors in the development of transverse micrognathism in schoolchildren.
